Running and Resolutions

Yes, this is a stereotypical New Year’s Resolution(s) blog post… sorry, not sorry.
Last year, my resolution was me phoning it in a bit. I decided that I would do something along the lines of “running at least two races of 10 kilometers or more,” with the knowledge that I had already signed up for a half marathon that was being run at the end of April. I don’t know what I thought I was going to be so busy with, but the reason I say “phoning it in” is that I finished the year having run three 10K’s and five, yes FIVE, half marathons. I bested my first half marathon time by more than ten minutes, crept ever closer to running a sub-1:40 13.1 (less than two minutes to shave off!), and still managed to make time for friends, schoolwork, and a full-time job, whew!
In light of the flop that was my 2013 resolution, I have three resolutions for myself in 2014:
– Run more.
– Write more.
– Be more positive.

While none of these resolutions are terribly life-changing or technically difficult to achieve, I thought they would serve me well as reminders throughout the year to simply “BE better.” I love to run—why not keep improving my pace or run farther? Writing is enjoyable and serves as a bit of therapy—why not write more frequently? Being positive is not always something I’m successful at, and the last six months of 2013 I found myself especially struggling—why not worry less about all the things that could go wrong and focus more on all of the things that are right?
On the subject of resolution one, I’m officially registered for—and one week away from the first day of training for—the 2014 Lansing Marathon, woo! As you may remember, the 2012/inaugural running of the race in Lansing was the first half marathon I ran, and I could not be more excited for this “homecoming” of sorts to be my first marathon. I’ve also applied to run the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon, so fingers crossed for some good news on that front in late March/early April! Other upcoming races for me include the Brrr-ooklyn Half Marathon on January 25 and the Frozen Penguin Half Marathon on March 1—both races put on by the fabulous people at NYCRuns—along with plans to run or volunteer at as many of the summer series 5/10K’s as I can, while working toward a 9+1 guaranteed entry for the 2015 NYC Marathon. And to support my running habit, I spent a pretty penny on some new running shoes, running tights that are good down to 15 degrees, wool socks for cold runs, and the Nike+ SportWatch that I’ve been drooling over for the last year and a half (all pictured below).
As for resolutions two and three, well, resolution two has begun being addressed in writing this post and resolution three will continue to be a work in progress. Now, enjoy looking at pictures of my new toys, and tell me, what were your New Year’s Resolutions?
